| There are two species of coffee beans with economic significance: arabica & robusta. Arabica grows at altitudes above 3000 ft.; considered a high quality bean it produces a flavorful and aromatic coffee, lower in acidity and caffeine, and more expensive. Robusta grows below 2000 ft.; it is less favorful, less aromatic, has twice the caffeine, and often used as a filler for canned coffees to help reduce cost. Robusta beans have twice the caffeine as Arabica Arabica constitutes 75% of the world's coffee production, but only the top 10% are fine enough to meet the specialty coffee standards. It takes about 5 years for an Arabica coffee plant to mature and produce it first crop, which is about 2 pounds. Coffee grown at higher elevations generally exhibit finer qualities. Jamaican Blue Mountain is the rarest premium coffee as only about 100,000 pound are produced each year. To learn more about coffees from around the world ...
